Community management and social media: what you need to know
Managing an online community is about far more than posting. It's a strategic role that directly shapes your brand's reputation, trust and sales.

A community manager isn't just someone who 'runs the social media accounts'. They're the voice of your brand, the guardian of your online reputation, and often your first digital salesperson.
The community manager's core responsibilities
- Editorial management — content calendar, writing, scheduling
- Engagement — replying to comments and messages, keeping conversations going
- Monitoring — tracking brand mentions and industry trends
- Moderation — handling negative comments and reputation crises
- Analysis — monthly reporting, performance review, recommendations
Responding to negative comments
Never ignore a negative comment. Responding publicly, with empathy and without defensiveness, often turns a crisis into an opportunity to show your professionalism. The rule: acknowledge it, then offer to resolve it offline (private message, email).
Golden rule
An unanswered negative comment does ten times more damage than one met with a professional reply. Future customers read your responses as closely as the comments themselves.
The content calendar
Plan at least four weeks ahead. Rotate content types, formats (image, video, text, stories) and objectives (engagement, awareness, sales). A calendar reduces stress and keeps your editorial voice consistent.
Measuring and adjusting
KPIs to track monthly: engagement rate (target: +3%), organic reach, follower growth, click-through rate, conversions from social media. Adjust your strategy based on data, not hunches.
