Mobile-first optimization: adapting your site to today's usage
Google has prioritized the mobile version of sites for indexing since 2019. If your site isn't optimized for smartphones, you're losing Google rankings — and customers.

In West Africa, more than 85% of internet access happens via smartphone. Designing a 'mobile-first' site isn't a luxury — it's the baseline requirement for having any digital presence at all.
What is mobile-first indexing?
Since 2019, Google has used the mobile version of your site for indexing and ranking. In practice, that means: if your mobile site is subpar, your Google rankings suffer — even for desktop searches.
The criteria for a high-performing mobile-first site
- Load speed — under three seconds on a 3G network
- Responsive design — smooth adaptation to every screen size
- Text readable without zooming — minimum 16px for body copy
- Tappable buttons — minimum 44x44px, with enough spacing
- No Flash and no intrusive pop-ups — penalized by Google
- Optimized images — WebP format, compressed without losing quality
Quick test
Enter your site's URL into Google PageSpeed Insights (free). A mobile score under 50 means optimization is an absolute priority. A score above 80 is a solid base.
Core Web Vitals: the metrics that matter
Google measures three key metrics for mobile experience: LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) — how fast the main content loads, FID/INP (interactivity), and CLS (visual stability). These scores directly influence your ranking.
